Here's What Educators From Around the Country Had to Say About GIANT + Lysol® Minilabs Science Kits
In case you missed it, this school year GIANT has been partnering with Lysol® on their Here For Healthy Schools program! Back in August, we made the announcement that Lysol® and The GIANT Room were launching Lysol® Minilabs Science Kits with a fun press event with Keegan-Michael Key!
These kits were co-designed by both educators and families. Their input heavily influenced the activities, work-flow, and efficiency of the kits. We would like to thank all of those who helped us out. Your input is what helped to bring these kits to life!
Now…*drumroll please*....we’ve asked participating teachers for their feedback and the results are in!
To start, we had 430 teachers provide feedback. All in all, teachers reported that the Lysol® Minilabs program was a massive success, fostering enthusiasm for science, learning about microbes, hygiene awareness, and behavioral improvements. Overall, teachers said there is a very high likelihood (9.45/10) of implementing the kit again in the next academic year. We achieved an NPS of 81 for Lysol® Minilabs Kit #1. NPS above 80 is considered world-class.
Here’s how the kits have impacted students’ understanding and education, according to teachers:
Impact on students’ knowledge
A very high percentage of teachers who have implemented the full kit or parts of the kit reported improvement on their students’ knowledge:
Each kit contained a set of microbe ID cards, specifically designed to resemble Pokémon cards. One teacher literally commented: “The microbe cards were a hit—like Pokémon for science!” In addition, the cards feature real-life images of microbes under the microscope! This feature was specifically added because of feedback we received during the co-design sessions.
The cards were also used to inspire a featured activity where students were prompted to create their very own microbe ID cards. The GIANT Room hosted a number of raffles where teachers even got the chance to publish their class’s deck of cards through the GIANT Remix program using a suite of AI tools.
One of the featured take-home activities involved a map and prompted students to grab a marker, draw microbes, and identify germ hotspots throughout their school. This activity was also featured in Spanish.
An activity co-designed by kids during our sessions involves two models of a child, one sick and one healthy, and two packs of stickers. One pack of stickers contained images that represented microbes such as E. Coli (one of the stars of our slides comics) and many others, and the other pack contained microbe busters such as hand-washing, keeping your home clean, washing your fruit, etc.
Impact on students’ attitudes
A very high percentage of teachers who have implemented the full kit or parts of the kit reported improvement on their students’ attitudes.
As we all know, handwashing is a major part of basic hygiene and keeping our bodies free of illness. This was repeated throughout all three lessons in kit #1. Teachers also commented on how much they enjoyed the prewritten lesson plans. One said “I loved not having to lesson plan. It was simple, effective, and engaging!”
Each kit also contains a journal for each student, for them to follow along with each lesson plan. Journals also contain both individual and group activities.
Each set of slides contained optional extensions for educators to implement — all hands on and creative.
Impact on students’ behavior
A high percentage of teachers who have implemented the full kit or parts of the kit reported improvement on their students’ behavior.
As mentioned before, the importance of handwashing is repeated throughout all sets of slides, sometimes in form of the comics, sometimes in the form of a game, and sometimes in the form of a true-or-false quiz.
All slides contain comic sections starring microbes E. Coli, our villain, and Bacteriophage, our hero. Both humorous and informative, Bacteriophage and E. Coli guide students through the various activities and lessons. There is also a Spanish version of the slides.
When we asked for feedback, one teacher commented “Students now remind each other to cover mouths and wash hands—it’s a game-changer.”
An overwhelming majority of educators expressed gratitude for the opportunity to participate and noted significant improvements in student awareness of hygiene.
We would like to thank all of the educators that provided feedback for kit #1. Kit #2 is currently being implemented in schools, and kit #3 will be on its way before we know it! In addition, we would also like to thank the educators and families that participated in our co-design sessions. These kits are particularly impactful because of their input that we incorporated and took into consideration throughout the design phases. From families and educators co-designing with before launch to teachers providing feedback as they implement their kits, we are so grateful.
