GIANT’s Creative Technologist Hazal Mestci displays Portals

The collaborative nature and sustainable approach to art, incorporating integrative perspective, deeply rooted in collage style but with organic mass and subject matter. The creative process involved switching between people’s touches to make art transformative and not belonging to one but to many. “Portals” repurposes excess wood from the laser cutter leftovers, and creates new geometric forms with aims of sustainability, collaboration, and transformation

The inspiration behind the work…

“Portals” stems from sustainability, collaboration, and the idea of repurposing and exploration. How does one provide space for everyone to experiment with material freely but not necessarily waste it? How does one make art public and revoke personal ownership? How do we allow fluid boundaries around art and allow artists to be constantly changing it or adding to it? What is our immediate response to material use and transformation? How do we assemble different forms to create a new whole? Can a stacked accumulation of material represent “waste” by itself or can it gain a new purpose of being “art”? “Can art ‘emphasize... concept and process over the end product’ rather than giving full credit to the final product itself?

How can we inspire each other to create something new with waste materials? Portals is an emergent study provoking kids and families to consider how they can contribute to this idea and installation. The artist Hazal Mestci’s use of collage-style aims to use sustainable art practices and create unique visual windows that others can interpret, enjoy and build themselves. Her creative process involves switching between people’s touch to make art and reconfiguring sets of discarded laser cut work to transform pieces into a new form.

Feeling inspired to create something similar? Go for it! The best part is you can participate in making your own collage style piece and are invited to display it alongside the artist’s work.
